[Design] Character Generation: Detail vs Opportunity Cost

There are solutions to long character generation-
1) Have the players do it beforehand, and the GM adjudicates before the game starts.
2) Have the players give the GM a "system-free" description of their characters - and the GM creates them in the system (this is how I do Fantasy Hero).
Characters should be individual - one of the things that people complain about A LOT in D&D is the lack of individuallity between characters. Every class is exactly the same at every level as every other character of the same class and level. The only distinguishing features are the magic items they acrue. Even the feats do not differentiate much - only giving the illusion of choice.

characteristics can often be faster than players
having to choose stats and traits!
