All very true and well put. Personally, I see 'game balance' in mechanics as a usful (but not essential) tool to help a referee in one of his or her main roles, that is to endevour to give all players the opportunity to contribute then go beyond that and encourage them to do so. 
Maybe, I'm still bitter from too many triple class elves in high school AD&D but a 'double whamy' of powerful character and an extroverted player can ruin games unless the referee is skilled in manipulating the group dynamic
