Objet : [HQ Ignorance] Scene 54: The Battle of Seshnela; The First Three Hours
As Yelm returned to the land of the West and darkness
descended upon Genertala, the loathsome army led by
Theoblanc entered Seguarane Forest. Thousands of
zombies poured in, recent victims from the war between
the Kingdom of Sehnela and Nolos three armies of two
thousand each. Every score was led by a Vampire or
Wizard in the centre of these squadrons and every ten
was a torchbearer. Behind them marched a like number
of skeletons, the bones of hardened warriors from a
hundreds of years past from Asgolan Fields.
Arrayed against them was Aalmon's skirmishers. A mere
fifteen hundred, mainly Aldryami Runners, and fleet
footed Elves, but with the advantages of being within
forest, at night and with pace. The opening conflicts
where swift and brutal. Hordes of runners engaged
their zombie enemies at close quarters, the whipsticks
proving surprisingly effective at close range to
disabling, and at times incapacitating, their slow
moving opponents. In contrast however, the zombies
with their stench of death and great strength were
able at times to literally tear the runners apart. For
every zombie taken down however, two more would take
their place, and the Runners soon had to adopt a
policy of attacking only to bait and flee, rather than
to disable.
[Zombie Defense of 15, roll 3, Runner move/attack of
15, roll 2, marginal victory, Zombie Attack 20, roll
19 Runner defense/move 9 (numerical inferiority), roll
14, marginal loss].
Aalmon's objective in this sense was overwhelming
successful; all three zombie armies - west, central
and east zombie - and the three skeleton armies* all
gave pursuit. As per Aalmon's request, bands of Elves
attempt to close and attack Vampires and Wizards,
however the sheer number of the surrounding undead
made this exceedingly difficult and more often than
not, they could not manage a disabling wound on these
control-and-command centres. The counter-attacks from
the Vampires and Wizards was often swift and deadly,
seemingly empowered and many Elves fell and the
survivors were forced to flee northwards.
[Aldyrami move/attack 1W, roll 9, Vampire/Wizard
defense 5W, roll 9, tie, Vampire/Wizard attack 10W,
roll 6 Aldryami move/defend 15, roll 8, major defeat]
By 10 pm at night the southern section of Seguarane
Forest was firmly in the hands of the enemy. The
skirmishers had attracted the attention of the undead
forces and had funnelled them to the southern banks of
the Deu River, between Seguarane City and the Aldryami
dam. There, in the muddy flats of the former mighty
river, the movement of both Zombie and Skeleton had
slowed to a crawl. In contrast the mercenaries,
militia and core of Vampires and Wizards led by
Theoblanc had virtually ignored the distracted and had
headed directly toward Segurane City, where they would
reach the banks of the Deu within the hour.
At best the Fellowship had to admit this was a partial
loss. True the forces of the enemy had been moved into
positions that they preferred, but the sheer weight of
numbers of the undead had proven to be more than the
skirmishers could handle. Worse still, there was no
news from either the Trollkin or Aalmon Far Rider.
* I left out one skeleton army on the map; it is a
vanguard, starting on the south-east just off the
map's bottom edge.
