OK as for the gold I am assuming it would take a *lot* of cash to bribe
a whole army so what Aalmon has is a convincing down-payment - perhaps
one-third of a full-on bribe to change sides or enough to persuade them
to turn round and leave without a fight.

Aalmon is using his stealth and perception magics to let him check out
the army as it tries to make its way through the woods, what he is
looking for are Theoblanc's loyalists who will be there to keep the
troops in line. He wants to initially approach a part of the army that
is out of sight of those loyalists, which would normally be damn hard
but in a forest should be quite possible. He will ask Beast to watch his
back and be ready to go back to the others with the news if it all seems
to go wrong. Then he will go in under a flag of truce and largely let
the gold talk for itself although I daresay his persuasive and seductive
magics might help things on a little, as would the fact that so far
Theoblanc's army has taken a major setback in the battle for no real
loss to their enemy.

Aalmon will give the impression the merchants of the city are the ones
offering employment to the mercenaries and he might let them jump to the
conclusion that he is a mercenary in their employ as he will act in
every way as a military man. No need for them to know that there are no
mercenaries in the city. No need for Theoblanc to find out who is
directing the defence if the approach goes wrong, sometimes a half-truth
can be more misleading than a lie.
