Nauticles is indeed able to direct Karala to those of the shamatic
tradition. Despite Nochet being a sprawling metropolis, there is a very
surprising large number of such practitioners. which leads her to
believe that the people of this land have somehow managed to be urbane
and spiritual. The very concept intrigues here, as she rarely sees this.

With directions granted by Nauticles (and assisted along the way with
aid of her wolf-whistle), Karala eventually makes her way to a large
central park as night falls. There, she has been told that a coven of
women shamen meet at the shrine of the Goddesses.

Indeed it is the case; there are no less than three score of shamen
present, all women. Karala is introduced to Hecate, the coven's nominal
leader. This old crone is bent with years, holding herself up with a
gnarled staff. Her face has many tatoos and scars and she wears a
necklace of bones.

Despite outward appearances and a gruff demeanore, Hecate proves to be
quite amicable to Karala, and especially to the White Wolf. She explains
the way of things in Esrolia, how women rule over men, for the
disposition of men is too wild and needs to be kept in check - they are
happiest when they are working, for then ideas of war and pillaging do
not enter their minds. Love, fertility and community is what has made
Esrolia great and it will continue to do so.

The discussion among the shamen is serious. It has now been many months
since the wind stopped blowing, and whilst earth spirits are raised to
improve the bounty of the lands, it is clear that without the storm god
the supply of water from the heavens has been significantly reduced. No
magic from any of the Gods in the Storm Pantheon seem to work; not even
those from blessed Ernalda. In the north many people have turned to the
Lunar Pantheon for assistance and even here their presence is felt.
Those that do not have turned to various shamen for assistance. There
are mutterings of a rebel leader, Kallyr Starbrow, but it is believed
that she too has been defeated.
