Nice scene Erica! OK, this is a challenge to get the machine working.

Your magic is Sorcery of the World Machine at 17 as part of your
cultural keyword, against a standard resistance of 14. But this is from
an unfamiliar and distant folk; the Dwarves of these lands are from the
far east and you're from the far west. The device was created by
Octomonists, a Dwarven heresy which claims that the iron dwarves and
diamond dwarves aren't even real dwarves!

(Of course, the Dwarves of the Nidan mountains, such as Kalen, belong to
the Openhand heresy but that's another matter entirely)

The practical upshot of all this is that you're at -5 to operate the
device. It's not particularly complex, just a bit foreign...

So with an ability of 12 .. the roll is 12
Against a resistance of 14 .. the roll is 20!

Well, that's a major victory; Kalen works out the machines operations in
no time and with a whirl and a spark the machines starts up again after
being unused for hundreds of years. There is smoke and sparks, and bolts
of lightning bouncing between the two chambers. Finally, there is an
almighty clap like thunder and the machine powers down..

When the smoke clears there is a man standing in the middle chamber. He
looks a bit like Guillarme, but his cheekbones are higher, his nose
longer, his chin receding. The fact that he sniffs the air as he steps
out is a little disconcerting as well.

Giving a very toothy smile he throws himself at Kalen and hugs him
tightly. "Thank you Mr. Dwarf, thank you! Now we are indeed one! We once
shared our minds, and now we share the same flesh! Oh, such wonderful
sorcery you Mostal do make!"
