Well, spending points to increase an ability is usually to cement a
benefit gained in play or introduce backstory which previously hasn't
been mentioned. Or they can be used to change a success, which can be
narrated as follows:
Rikku finds a clothier, who speaks a semblance of a Sartarite traders
tongue. "In the rag trade, eh?", the Godlearner wryly grins as he looks
through the fairly poor pickings.
Suddenly something special catches Rikku's eye and he inquires of the
price*. Alas, the trader is quite savvy of his goods.**
"Oh, very expensive", he says.
"How expensive?", Rikku asks again.
"I am not sure you can afford", the trader responds, looking over the
dishevelled Godlearner.
"Listen friend", with a whine on the latter word, "I'll be the judge of
that. How much?"
"Twelve silvers", the trader responded.
Rikku thought about it for a moment; it was the equivalent of three days
wages for most people, but certainly a fair price for a well-to-do
citizen.
[Spend one hero point and that will give you a minor victory, so it will
be very good clothes (very well cut and stitched), spend two hero points
and wealthy clothes (as above plus very fine thread) and spend three
hero points it will count as rich clothes (e.g., best silk lining and
padding, hidden gold thread etc)
* Roll 2 from a wealth of 12
** Roll 3 for Resistance, a marginal success for the Godlearner
