With their quarry near the noble venturers prepared
themselves for the final confrontation. Protective
magics against fire, spells of strength, and prayers
were cast as the party ascended the stairs to the
upper level of the spider ship.
On top of those stairs the front line were confronted
by two swirling mists which stung the nose and throat.
But the party were not troubled; the central column of
these gaseous monstrosites sought to contact Sir Duc
and Tac, but were prevented by the Paladin's Godly
protection. Waitabith hammered the miasma with magical
missiles which dispersed.
(Later research of Bestiaries will show that these
Yochlol, Handmaidens of Arachne, were capable of
causing Stinking Cloud within 10 feet and Cloudkill
within 1'. Almost impervious to normal attacks,
Waitabit's Magic Missiles were indeed a perfect
solution).
The next room was huge, some 110 feet in length and 50
foot wide. Inside were treasures from all around the
world, plus numerous arachnids - scorpions, pedipalps,
and solifugid. These proved to be troublesome with
their remarkable ability to capture characters in
their claws. Under Lord Tanc's command, the noble Sir
Duc and Lady Megan on two occassions had to suffer
great balls of fire to blast these foul beings away.
As the party dispensed on the monstrosities, the doors
at the far end burst open. Standing in the doorway was
olive-skinned woman of unearthly beauty, her armed
draped over huge demonic servants as if they were her
companions. Without a doubt it was Arachne herself.
Taking the initiative Louis and Pierre flew into the
fray on their carpets of flying. Waitabit hammered one
of the demons only to discover that there was a globe
of invulnerbility surrounding the wicked. Sir Duc
charged only to frozen in place by a Word of Power,
Tanc and Megan also charged, flanking the Lady of
Scropshire.
The Demons fought against Pierre and Louis with
finesse; Louis was flung back by the Demonic ability
of unnatural telekinesis. The other demons with its
multiple arms hacked away savagely at Lord Pierre, who
could barely hang on to the carpet and had to flee.
But then Waitabit read a scroll which revealed the
demon goddesses True Name and wracked its spirit.
Whilst a being of such power would be rarely affected
by such magics, on this day God himself must have
stared the Fates and commanded good fortune. Arachne
froze in place, paralyzed, her body shuddering from
the words of truth. Goldor and Sven took advantage of
the situation and rained fire from the heavens upon
the demons and their goddess, and again the resistance
to magic failed the goddess.
With her body blackened in fire, the Goddess begged
for mercy and gave parley which was granted. First she
surrended Adronicus' soul which she kept, and all that
space and time distant the Elf regained his full
faculties. She then tried to explain her wickedness as
a result of the cruel tricks played upon by Minerva
and Athene, the former who killed her mortal body and
broke her loom, and the latter who brought her back to
existence as a spider.
The venturers were not impressed; her threat to undo
the fabric of space and time itself for these
misdemeanors were punishments far out of proportion to
her suffering. Thus, under the rules of the spirit
wrack, her flesh would burn for another fourteen years
and she would be confined to her spider ship in
torture.
Using a scroll to travel between the Planes the
venturers arrived to a nexus of the good heavens,
where they met St. Michael and told him of Arachne's
threat. St Michael congratulated the characters on
their victory and said that the forces of good would
employ the Lawful Modrons would ensure that Arachne's
plan will never come to fruition. St Michael then
transported the venturers to their respective homes.
Such a journey they could not have been imagined from
that humble day that a small group, fresh-faced in
youth, sought to investigate allegations of a haunted
house in the Cornish town of Saltmarsh. But now it was
over; or at least until 14 years had passed... and
then there would be a very angry Goddess...
THE END.
FOR NOW. BWAHAHAHAHA!
