I think a reliquary would be more suitable for a purely religious and 
possibly static group. I can quite easily imagine warbands of knights 
using banners in the West.

That would be an amusing form of guardian communication, band members 
can somehow make sense out of the words they see fluttering on the 
banner - what they see depends on what the guardian is trying to 
communicate at the time. Of course the essense/spirit/whatever of the 
banner can not communicate with anyone now because nobody is bound to it 
in a hero band.

Well yes but Arkat was also Gbaji ;-)

The awareness power of the guardian may well be against traitors rather 
than against external threats, that might fit well with the Talor myths 
(although one of Arkat's other followers became a byword for loyalty - 
Makla Mann ).

I would think these would be additional to the powers of the guardian, 
i.e. powers of the physical form of the banner rather than of the 
magical being inhabiting it. Although transferring Truce and Negotiation 
into its blessing or defence could also make a lot of sense.
