[HQ Ignorance] Elvishness and rootlessness

Thanks for your thoughts Nic (Soren, you can keep your thoughts to yourself ;-) ).

Here´s the situation - rootless just doesn´t seem to fit at all. If a rootless elf is something like a broken dwarf, that´s just wrong the wrong person for the Elf Nation (if such a thing exists) to have sent. If it is someone who lives on the margins and can function as an ambassador etc, well, it is still an outcast for want of a better word. (Okay for a communicator, but not as the hero you want to send to make sure things are done right.) Seeing as a big part of the HQ vibe is belonging to a community, this just feels all wrong - I´m not interested in such a character (personally and in this instance), as Nic has guessed.

So, a -10 penalty... In principle, I have no problem with penalties / flaws and so on. This is a big one, though, equivalent to a 1W5 flaw for just about everything. Extra abilities from the narrative will be usable at a rating of 3. Even with a 1W (Used to Being Away from the Forest type) ability to offset this, I am left with a base of 5 (or a 1W4 flaw). Not so much a hero as a walking (she´ll need wheels though) liability (or cart). I guess I could be vaguely interested in such a character in a game which didn´t have the words "epic", "continent-spanning" and "sweep" in it :)

I also think it is a hassle to book-keep all this.

This is why I thought of a specially bred type person (plant) which could function more normally. I actually thought of it as being a particular rootstock upon which the elf/dryad person is grafted.

An analogy would be a troll PC among hoomans - provided they´ve a big floppy hat, shades and some good suncream, I´d leave it roleplay rather than anything more.

"You miss the forest? Yeah, well I miss my mum. Now get up of the floor and do something useful or we´ll use you as a broom again".

  Any further thoughts Lev?

  Sam.

I used to play that rootless elves were often the messengers and
diplomats for the forests. They lack elfsense and learn to use their
other senses to compensate - so I certainly never believed that rootless
elves suffered a penalty outside the forests (or a bonus when within it
for that matter). Even back in RQ2 days it was clear that rootless elves
did the things that normal elves could not or would not do.

Of course being rootless is not necessarily nice for the elf concerned,
in human terms i think its a partly like being blind and yet partly like
being disowned by your family. This may not fit your character concept
at all.

Nic
